Vintage Alvar Aalto NR31 Chair Elte Vintage Collection Factory Outlet

An icon of Scandinavian design, this vintage NR31 Chair was designed by Alvar Aalto and manufactured for his famous Paimio Tuberculosis Sanatorium, Finland circa 1930s. A pioneering innovation of plywood design history, this chair’s frame was revolutionary and marked the first use of laminated birch wood in a cantilevered structure, as the seat and back are created from one piece of form-pressed plywood. With an inviting look, the fluid shape presents no straight lines.

Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) deserves an immense share of the credit for bringing Scandinavian modernism to a prominent place in the global arena. In both his buildings and in his vintage furniture — which ranges from chairs, tables and lighting to table- and glassware — Aalto’s sensitivity to the natural world and to organic forms and materials tempered the hardness of rationalist design.
